Tuesday, July 22, 2008, 2:30:44 PM by: Lyndsay Walker
Things have been really busy this month. We're getting down to the wire, less than three weeks to go now. I've never been busier at work and Dave... is busy kicking ass at NHL 08. :)

We'll be in Winnipeg the entire week before the wedding, thought I'm starting to wonder if we shouldn't be there the week before as well. There are so many little things to do and the time will fly by.

We've had Maureen with us since last Sunday, as she was having laser eye surgery. The surgery went well but she's having a slight flap complication so she goes to have that fixed tomorrow. We expect her to go back to Winnipeg on Thursday night. Then Dave and I will enjoy one more week at home before the wedding.

In Bomber news, they're, well, bombing. 0-4 to start the season - ouch. We're really hoping to see an upswing soon!

By the way, if you want to come to the August 8 game with us, tickets will be available via our web site soon. I'd bug Dave to do that today, but Maureen made pie today and if you know Dave, you'll easily be able to tell which will get higher priority :)

Comments (0)

Stampede

Friday, July 04, 2008, 7:27:16 PM by: Lyndsay Walker
Today marked the first day of the 2008 Calgary Stampede. What does this mean for us? Nothing really. A yummy pancake breakfast tomorrow morning with free access to the Stampede all day. That could be fun, it's supposed to be really nice. Tuesday I'll be working at the WestJet booth. Not totally sure doing what, but I did it last year too and it was a lot of fun.

Dave's quite in his element now that the CFL has restarted. Unfortunately, Winnipeg lost last week and it's not looking good against Montreal (1:14 left in the third quarter). Ohh!! Wait! It just got picked off!! TOUCHDOWN!! Way to go Bombers! Dave is very happy. And yes, all of this happened as I was writing this post. Yeehaw!!

Well that seems like a nice way to leave the post. Go Bombers!

Comments (3)

An update

Wednesday, June 25, 2008, 12:43:56 PM by: Lyndsay Walker
Given that we're down to 45 days to go, you'd think we'd be updated this a little more. Hmm. I blame it on the fact that I was in Ontario all last week and wasn't on the computer much.

Last week I went to Toronto to present at Search Engine Strategies. It went very well though I think I crammed too much content into a short time period. I will dedicate a little more time and effort to it on my professional blog, www.lyndseo.com/blog.

I also had my Ontario shower on Friday evening which was a TON of fun. There were so many people there, it truly touched my heart. Some people I hadn't seen in years. It was really great to reconnect. I spent the weekend with the Williams/Rice gang and, as always, had a fabulous time. Chuck and I went to see Get Smart on Saturday night. It definitely had its funny moments, but won't win any Oscars.

Hard to believe it's already Wednesday this week. I was hoping to use the long weekend for working on wedding details, but I am covering for two other people on holidays this week so I imagine I'll be racking up a lot of overtime.

Dave is really excited since the CFL regular season kicks off this week. We are contemplating going to the Stampeders' home opener against the BC Lions. Depends if the weather holds out - mother nature isn't exactly reliable here in the Heart of the New West. I think Dave's even more excited about the first Bomber game we'll get to go to - on July 11 against BC again.

It definitely won't be a boring summer, no doubt about that!

Comments (0)

Saturday, June 14, 2008, 9:41:28 PM by: Lyndsay Walker
I had to pick up Dave last night from the airport at 7, so I decided to go to work late and stay there until it was time to pick him up. By time we got home (after stopping for supper) it was 9pm. We watched a movie (The Other Boleyn Girl) and promptly went to bed. NOTE: Dave would like me to mention that he spent a good 30 minutes giving me a foot rub during the movie. Thanks honey :)

Today I went to donate blood. When I got home, I had a horrible dizzy spell in the elevator. I actually had to call Dave to help me from the elevator to the apartment. After sleeping for 4 hours and having something to eat, I'm finally feeling better but still not 100%. Right now I'm chugging some gatorade trying to get up enough strength to pack for my week in Ontario.

Tomorrow morning I hop on a flight to Hamilton. Monday I head to Toronto. I'm having lunch at Wayne Gretzky's with one of our vendors, followed by meetings. I'll have dinner with Dave's cousins Chuck and Steve. Tuesday I have an 8am breakfast with Google, and then I'm at Search Engine Strategies Toronto conference at the convention centre. I'm speaking on Wednesday afternoon. After that, I'll go back to St. Catharines for two days off! Yeah!

Friday evening is my Ontario shower. Sounds like there will be a good turnout, I'm excited. Finally, Sunday I'll come back to Calgary.

So, Dave spent this past week in Winnipeg, I'm spending this week in Ontario. We've had a whopping one day together. We'll have to make up for lost time when I get back, but with only EIGHT WEEKS to go until the wedding, my free time with probably be spent working on allll the little details.

Oh and HEY! We've got a LOT of people who still need to RSVP.... the deadline is July 1, but don't forget that you can RSVP online anytime :)

Comments (0)

Monday, June 09, 2008, 11:21:46 AM by: Lyndsay Walker
Two months to go! That's 61 days. But who's counting?

Some milestones coming up. Most notably, all unbooked rooms under our group rate will be released back into inventory. That means to get the $139/night rate you MUST book today! Just call the Inn at the Forks at 1-877-377-4100.

The other milestone is the RSVP deadline - July 1. We sent out the invitations quite early for our out of town guests, and many of you (in town as well) have responded by either mailing in your RSVP card or by using our Online RSVP Tool. But there are many of you whom we haven't heard from... please don't forget to RSVP as soon as you can!

Dave and I were in Winnipeg this weekend. In fact, he'll be in Winnipeg all week. Which means I'm a bachelorette again :) I have no big plans. Really just to get ready for my trip to Toronto next week. Yes, Dave is in Winnipeg all this week and I'm in Toronto all next week. How romantic!

Anyhow, we had another productive wedding weekend. Good thing - time is going FAST. We may be in Winnipeg only one more weekend before we fly in for the wedding. This weekend we got Dave's suit, his wedding band, and we booked our spa appointments at the Forks.

Comments (0)

2008 CFL Pool

Thursday, June 05, 2008, 10:25:46 AM by: Dave Blahut

Every year, Lyndsay and I partcipate in an online CFL pool. I have been participating since 1996 and Lyndsay has been playing since 2006. It's free to play and a lot of fun. We encourage all our friends and families to sign up and see how they match up against us.

Sign up now before the season starts at the CFL prediction page

Comments (0)

2008 CFL Predictions and Preview

Saturday, May 31, 2008, 8:04:02 PM by: Dave Blahut

The 2008 CFL season is just around the corner. Rookie camps opened on Wednedsay and full camps open tomorrow. Here are my early predictions for this season.

EAST

Winnipeg Blue Bombers : The 2007 edition fell 5 points shy of winning the Grey Cup with their backup QB, making his very first CFL start. During the offseason, the Bombers managed to re-sign all of their key free agents, losing only Kyries Hebert to the NFL. Glenn, Stegall, Roberts, Armstrong, Goodspeed, Canada, Brown, Simpson, and Walls... This is going to be one strong team. The Bombers only weakness is their special teams.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats : This prediction might surprise some people. The Ti-Cats have been the CFL celar dwellers for a number of years and it's time for them to start showing some improvements. Casey Printers joined the team late in the season and failed to improve the team beyond a 3-15 record, but this year, he has a full training camp to learn the offense and gell with his team. Jesse Lumsden is force and will be among the leagues top rushers if he stays healthy.

Toronto Argonauts : The Argos where among the worse teams offensively last year. They finished 8th for yards per game, 7th for passing yards per game and 7th for rushing yards per game. Pinball will no longer be coaching the team, handing the torch to defensive guru, Rich Stubler. The Argos did go get Grey Cup QB Kerry Joseph during the offseason, but lets face it - Joseph's best years are likely behind him and his presence is going to cause a QB controversy with Bishop. The Argos also have a tendency to sign washed up NFL players, the most recent being Mike Vanderjagt. Yes he is the most accurate kicker in NFL history, but he's getting up there in years, hasn't played in a long while and doesn't punt, meaning they'll have to get another player to handle those duties since they traded to Prefontaine to Edmonton.

Montreal Alouettes : Calvillo's numbers have been declining the past 3 seasons and the Als haven't done much to improve their team. They have a new coach this year, Marc Trestman. I just can't see the Als making much noise this year with a coach who has no CFL experience.

WEST

BC Lions : Wally Buono is one of the best coaches the CFL has ever seen. One of the top strengths is always having good depth at all the positions. Despite playing most of last season with his second and third string QB, the Lions finished first in the West with a record 14-3-1. There is no reason to doubt that they'll be just as good.

Calgary Stampeders : The Stampeders struggled defensively last year, giving up a league high 516 points. In the offseason, they got rid of Brian Clark and Scott Coe. They have added glass quarterback Dave Dickenson to backup Henry Burris and also have a new head coach, John Hufnagel. Both additions will make them a stronger team.

Edmonton Eskimos : Danny Maciocia is a bozo. He won the Grey Cup in his rookie coaching year, but he inherited that team from Tom Higgins. Since then, the Eskimos have missed the playoff 2 years in a row. How he still has his job is beyond me. The Eskimos did make some good offseason moves this winter, signing backup QB Jason Maas, Brock Ralph, Jordan Younger, Fred Perry, Keith Stokes and Noel Prefontaine. They should be an improved team this year, but as long as Mociocia is running the show they won't be much of a threat.

Saskatchewan Roughriders : From first to worst this year. They won it all last year (barely) but this won't be the same team this season. They lost their bench general, Kent Austin and replaced him with a CFL rookie head coach, Ken Miller. If that wasn't bad enough, they then traded away their offensive leader and starting QB, Kerry Joseph leaving the job to Marcus Crandell. They also lost one of their defensive leaders, Fred Perry. I just don't see how they'll be able to compete when they have lost so many key players. Best case for the Riders this years finishing 3rd, ahead of the Eskimos, but at this point I don't see it happening.

Comments (6)

Winnipeg Wedding Social in the books

Wednesday, May 07, 2008, 9:42:13 AM by: Dave Blahut

We had our wedding social this past weekend and since we turned a small profit, I think it was a mild success. The turnout wasn't as good as we would have liked, but it's difficult to sell tickets when you are two provinces over. We had some help from family and friends and we thank them for their contribution. A lot of people had let us know a head of time that they couldn't attend, but bought tickets anyway - thank you.

The Charley Bar and Grill was great. They made sure we had everything we needed and were very friendly. The only thing that could have been a bit better was the DJ. He wasn't really playing music that the crowd enjoyed and he played it too loud at times.

We did have access to a second room that we kept music-free for people to get away from the noise and to socialize if they wanted to talk. We had set up Dan's Playstation 3 to one of the TVs and had "Rock Band" available to play and we had an iPod available to win too. Turns out, that wasn't a very popular option. Live and learn.

Here are the winners of some of the bigger auction prizes we had :

Bomber Season Tickets - Ken Krahn

Autographed Football - Gordon Blahut

Limo Lounge package - Debra Lofvendahl

Nintendo Wii - Some dude I don't know

There are also some important people that I would like to thank again for all their help in making this social happen :

Dawn Miller & Glenn Laycock -Thank you for your help in getting prizes together, letting us use your home to prepare, selling tickets and all the other hard work you did.

Johanna Rondeau - Thank you for the prizes you rounded up for us and for recommending the Charley.

Elsie Delgaty - Thank you for coming all the way from St. Catharines to help on the weekend and at the door. Lyndsay and I appreciated all you've done and continue to do.

Thursday, April 17, 2008, 11:13:31 AM by: Lyndsay Walker
What an exciting year 2008 is turning out to be. Aside from our wedding, and Charlotte moving back to Canada at the end of the year, there are babies popping up from all over!

In January, our friends Carrie and Steve had a beautiful baby boy, Julien.

In March, my cousin Sara and Ken had her third child, Nicholas.

In May, Dave's coworker and his fiancee are expecting their first.

In June, my friend and coworker Marshall is expecting his first, a baby girl. Another coworker is also expecting in June.

In August, Dave and I will become aunt and uncle for the first time as Dan and Tracy have their first child! I admit, this one is especially exciting, since we get a title out of it. ;)

In September, Dave's cousin Mike and his wife Kristina will be having their first child. Another coworker of mine is due in September as well.

And the latest news is that Dave's cousin Don and Kelly are expecting their fourth child in November!

And get this people... it's only the middle of April!

Congratulations to all those above and their families.

Comments (0)

Monday, April 14, 2008, 2:19:20 PM by: Dave Blahut

There is an error on the tickets for the social evening. The address listed on the ticket is incorrect due to a typo. The correct address is:

Charley's Bar and Grill (Charleswood Hotel)
3425 Roblin Blvd, Winnipeg, MB (Google Map)

Comments (1)

A Guide to Winnipeg

Monday, April 14, 2008, 12:11:05 PM by: Lyndsay Walker
I was sent this today, and I thought I'd post it here to help out the people coming in from out-of-town for the wedding.

First you must learn to pronounce the city name. It is WIN-A-PEG,
not VIN-A-PEG and it does not matter how people pronounce it in other
places.

Winnipeg has its own version of traffic rules.
Never forget that downtown Winnipeg is composed in large part of one
way streets. The only way to get out of the center of town is to turn
around and start over when you reach the river.

All directions start with, "Go down Portage."

Portage has no beginning and no end.

The 8:00 a.m. rush hour is from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. The 5:00 PM rush hour
is from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday's rush hour starts on Thursday
morning.

If you actually stop at a yellow light, there's no chance you're from Winnipeg. Yellow lights are for sissies.

Lagimodiere Blvd can only be pronounced by a native Winnipegger, so do
not attempt the phonetic pronunciation. People will simply tilt their
heads to the right and stare at you. (And let's not forget Noter Dayme!
And of course, Portidge.)

Bingo, Bugs and Perogies are a way of life. Deal with it.

Construction on the Winnipeg streets in summer is a way of life and a
permanent form of entertainment. (Especially those dopey-looking city
workers holding up signs in traffic that say in big orange letters
"SLOW". I always want to yell, "You don't really need to advertise,
buddy!".

Many bizarre sights can be explained simply by realizing , "Oh, we're in Transcona!"

Construction crews aren't doing their job properly unless they close down all lanes except one during rush hour.

If someone actually has their turn signal on, it was probably left on at the factory where the car was made.

Buying a Winnipeg street map is a waste of money since the termination
or continuation of any street is entirely at the discretion of the
Works Department of the City. Eg: Salter, Isabel, Balmoral, Colony,
Memorial, Osborne, Dunkirk. You've gone two miles down the same road
and the name changes seven times.

Asking directions will
help you get acquainted with numerous happy-to-help residents. It may
not be any help at all for finding the address you seek.

Never honk your horn at another car in traffic. The bumper sticker that
reads,"Keep honking, I'm reloading." is considered a fair warning.

Exit and entry ramps on the Perimeter are just the recommended way of
entering and exiting, feel free to exit at any grassy point you wish.

All drivers frightened of heights, stay clear of Charleswood and its
ten-foot ditches. Believe me when I say you won't get out without a
hundred-dollar towing bill.

Your idea of creative landscaping is a statue of a deer next to your bluespruce.

Down South to you means Grand Forks.

Your 1st. of July picnic was moved indoors due to frost.

You have more miles on your snow blower than your car.

You find 0 degrees "a little chilly." But it is still t-shirt weather

You actually understand these jokes , and you forward them to all your Manitoba friends.

Comments (2)

Buy social tickets, RSVP online, vote in a poll

Sunday, March 30, 2008, 9:20:45 PM by: Lyndsay Walker
As time starts ticking away until the wedding, Dave and I have been working to make some additions to the web site.

Our social in Manitoba is just over a month away, and to make it easier for anyone not in Winnipeg who wishes to buy tickets, we have implemented a PayPal link to allow people to buy social tickets online. Visit the Social page for more details.

The next biggest addition is our RSVP section. This has been Dave's baby since before we even got engaged - he knew that he wanted people to have the option to RSVP online. You'll still have the option to send in the card, you can do both (but if you do, please make sure it's the same response). When you receive your invitation in the mail, you'll have a card that includes your unique invitation ID. You'll need that to RSVP online. I hope to have invitations mailed in the next few weeks, so stay tuned.

The final addition, a poll, was my idea, but my wonderful web programmer hubby-to-be had to spend his Sunday putting it together.

Our first question on the poll is whether or not you would like to attend the CFL football game taking place the night before the wedding. The Montreal Alouettes are playing the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Friday, August 8. You can bet that Dave and I will be there, but if we get enough people interested, we then have a couple of options.

Option A: Buy a bunch of tickets in the same section (upper deck, east side)

Option B: Use the touchdown tent in the south end zone. It's a private area (though we would be sharing it with others, max 200 people) and allows you to sit on the sideline or along the end zone. We would need to know ASAP if we have enough interest for that though.

Thanks for reading everyone! We appreciate your support.

Comments (0)

Another blog post on... Ikea purchases!

Monday, March 10, 2008, 8:28:47 AM by: Lyndsay Walker
This is for Anne and Chuck, who appreciated last summer's posts about our Ikea table and chairs so much.

We've got a lot of company coming over the next month, so we decided we should get our storage unit organized to try and reduce the clutter in the rest of the apartment. Friday after work we headed down to Ikea to look at storage options. We ended up buying pieces of a set so that we could put together a custom unit, instead of something pre-built.

Saturday we started purging and putting together the unit. 45 minutes and 3 screws later of poor Dave using just a basic wrench to put this thing together, we decided it was in our best interest to invest in a small ratchet set. Since it was such a beautiful day out (+12 and SUNNY!) we drove with the windows down and sunroof open to Canadian Tire. We scored a great deal there - an impact wrench (regular $150) for only $50! Score. Thanks to that purchase, we got the rest of the unit up in about an hour.

It was really nice to get all that done by Saturday evening. Sunday was definitely a day of rest. While I slept most of the day away, Dave built the application to allow people to RSVP here on the web site. We're still about two months away from sending the invitations, but they have been ordered so I was glad that he was able to get that done.

And now all of the sudden it's Monday morning again. Well, it's been one week of "Lyndsay's Traveling Hiatus" and so far I really like it. Maybe going a month without any traveling won't be so hard at all.

Comments (0)

Sunday, February 03, 2008, 6:27:15 AM by: Dave Blahut

We were supposed to get up early and visit Busch Gardens in Tampa Bay today, but I'm feeling ill, so we didn't do that. We mostly just hung around the house and rested. We did head out to Tampa later in the early evening to go see the Tampa Bay Lightning battle the Florida Panthers. The Panthers took an early 1-0 lead in the first but the Lightning came on strong in the second and scored 2 goals to take the lead. In the third, the Panthers scored twice, once in the last minute to win the game.

I had a great time, but wish I wasn't sick.

Orlando Day 5 : Disney's Magic Kingdom

Friday, February 01, 2008, 9:56:17 PM by: Dave Blahut

We finally made it to the Magic Kingdom park. It was an overcast day and bit rainy at times. We went on Space Mountain which was a great ride, but I got a bit of headache after because of all the quick, sudden movements. After Space Mountain I didn't ride anymore rides - I left the rest of fun to Lyndsay and Laura.

After the Magic Kingdom, we went to Mideval Times for dinner. We were seated in the yellow section and we cheered on our knight as he battled galantly.

Here are some pictures:

Disney's Magic Kingdom : Cinderella's Castle

Orlando Day 4 : Universal Studios

Thursday, January 31, 2008, 9:48:26 PM by: Dave Blahut

Not too many pictures were taken today. Lyndsay and I were on our own today, so we headed over to the Universal Studios park. Once in the park, our first stop was the Shrek 4D show. It was like a short 3D movie with added effects to the seat which added the forth dimention of the show (such as wind in your face, water spray, etc...)

Next we went on the "Disaster" ride. They took people out of the audience to participate in the show. Both Lyndsay and I were selected. We were filmed doing various activities against a green screen. Later we got into a subway type car and it took us to a subway station where the "natural disaster" effects took place. The earthquake was first, followed by the road overhead collapsing into the subway. An oil tanker truck slide down and exploded. Then a tidal wave of water came gushing down the stairs towards us. When it was all done and we went back to the beginning, they showed us a movie trailer where the green screened shots where inserted. It was a lot of fun. Unfortunately, no photography was allowed inside.

Next, Lyndsay and I got our charactures drawn. I'll post it on the site after we get home and I have access to a scanner.

Before we left, we decided to ride some of the bigger rides, so we went back to the car to drop off the camera and the drawing. After getting back to the park, we rode the Incredible Hulk roller coaster and the Spider-Man ride, which was a combination of a roller coaster/simulator 3D ride. Very cool.

At the end of the day, our feet were killing us from all of the walking we have done during the past 4 days that we decided to go get pedicures. It was first time and it was very nice to have someone pamper my feet.

Here are a couple of pictures we did take. The picture with Lyndsay and the space shuttle is an illusion - the shuttle is actually a small model in the foreground.

Universal Studios Globe

Sunday, January 20, 2008, 5:51:26 PM by: Lyndsay Walker
Wow, I love the letter "W". Can I get an amen from our Walker, Willms, Williams, Wizniak, Wetmiller and Wiens relatives?

Thursday afternoon I left balmy Calgary for FREEZING Winnipeg. All for the sake of wedding planning. I had a lovely dinner and visit with my mommy-in-law to-be, and crashed with my good friend Dawn.

Friday was a busy day! Got my hair cut (finally - haven't had a trim since June) by my friend Johanna at Fazes on Roblin, finished my enrolment with NEXUS, got an adjustment at my chiropractor, and met with Inn at the Forks to go over some reception details.

I can't speak highly enough of the service that Inn at the Forks has given us thus far. I am fully confident that they will give us a fantastic day on August 9. And the facilities are just beautiful.

By the way - you can book your hotel online... right now, the price they're quoting through the web site is the same as our group rate. I'm sure that won't last, so it's a good time to make sure you get a room at the lower price. No deposit required (just a credit card) and you can cancel up to 24 hours before (I think, might be 48 hours).

Anywho, back on topic. Tracy (sister-in-law to-be) and I went to the Wonderful Wedding Show at the Winnipeg Convention Center. Thankfully I knew we would be fairly quick since I don't need any of the "big" vendors, like a dress, venue, photographer, etc. What I was really looking for was a bakery, and a place to rent navy blue overlays (I assure you, this has been harder than it might seem).

I have decided to visit with two bakeries next time I'm in Winnipeg: High Tea Bakery and Chocolate Zen. I was impressed with the people I spoke with at both booths, and I have had many recommendations for both.

I was also very impressed with Tracy from Moments Event Planning. I knew I wanted to speak with them, because they are major sponsors of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. You may laugh at me, but I want to support a company that supports my team, the community's team. Regardless of that, she was really great and I look forward to talking with her later about overlays and any other "miscellaneous" items we may need.

Saturday I left the -45°C windchills of Winnipeg to a snow storm in Calgary. Well, what can I say. I live in Canada so I shouldn't really be surprised. Dave and I have had a lovely day at home, cleaning up and watching football. Does it get better than that?

Oh yes, it does. We're leaving next Sunday for a week in Orlando. Woohoo!

(edited to add Wetmiller! How could I forget??)

Comments (1)

New Eyes

Monday, January 07, 2008, 8:24:49 AM by: Dave Blahut
Lyndsay got intra-lasik corrective eye surgery on Friday and her vision started improving immediately. She was a little sensitive to light at first, but she is adjusting well. She has to use plenty of eye drops for the next few weeks and she has to wear plastic bubbles over her eyes when she sleeps so she doesn't accidentally rub them.

This morning, she had her first follow-up visit and the doctors have told her that she now has 20/20 vision. It's important for her to have good eye-sight because at the wedding when all eyes are on her, she'll be looking at me.

Comments (1)

Going to the Grey Cup! ...and the Vanier Cup

Sunday, November 18, 2007, 5:18:44 PM by: Lyndsay Walker

Well, probably not Dave and I specifically. But the Bombers are and we're very excited! Right now we're just waiting to find out who we'll be playing, and at the moment it looks like it'll be the Saskatchewan Roughriders. I don't know of a more fierce rivalry in the CFL so that will be a very exciting game!

We know we haven't posted much lately, but not a lot has really been happening. We're getting settled nicely in Calgary, and have been going to Winnipeg for most of the Bomber home games. I've also been in the Toronto area a few times recently. Now Dave and I hope to anchor down until after Christmas or so. I've decided to take a second job for some extra cash, so I'll be working evenings and weekends at Bell (Market Mall in Calgary). I'm also in school one night a week and about to start another course, though this one will be online. Add to that the fact that I'm going to Vegas for a week for work - things are very crazy for me right now! Dave and I will be hitting Orlando the last week of January for some very hard-earned downtime and fun.

Congratulations should also go to the Manitoba Bisons who have earned a trip to their national championship game - the Vanier Cup. Should be a great football weekend for Manitoba. Go Bisons, Go Bombers! [amended by Dave]

Comments (1)

Working From Home

Wednesday, September 12, 2007, 8:25:42 PM by: Dave Blahut

It's been a full week now since I've been working at home. How's it working out? Pretty good I would have to say. My hours have changed, but they haven't... confused? Don't be, it's simple. In Winnipeg, I was working 7:30 - 3:30. In Calgary, I'm working 6:30 - 2:20 but because of the time zone difference it's really the same.

The first few mornings were a little dark. I sign in before the sun comes up and we didn't have any lights in my office, so I was working in the dark for the first few hours. We solved that problem with the purchase of lamp.

It was a slow start on the first day. I couldn't remote into my computer in Winnipeg and our primary IT guy was on holidays. It took a while for Naylor to get me set up so I could connect, but once I did, things got busy. Maybe it's just me, but I think I'm more busy and more productive since I've started working from home.

It's also nice to be able to make a cup of tea, or go get a snack from the fridge. I can BBQ a burger or a smokie for lunch.

I think I'm going to need to get myself a headset for my phone. I've already had a few telephone meetings and it's uncomfortable to hold a phone to your ear for a hour at a time. I already have one, but the microphone isn't that great and people are complaining that they have trouble hearing me when I use it. We stopped at Best Buy and Future Shop today to look at some but they didn't have much in stock. One that cost $90, but that's more than I want to spend. I'll have to check back later when they get more.

Now that I'm starting to get into a regular schedule, I've started going for a swim as soon as I'm done at 2:30. I head right down to the pool and do laps for about 15 or 20 minutes. I'm going to try to do it everyday and I hope to increase the amount of laps until I'm at an hour.

So that's about it for my first week and a bit working from home.

Comments (0)

Our First Weekend at Home

Tuesday, September 04, 2007, 11:24:35 AM by: Lyndsay Walker
It's the Tuesday after Labour Day, which means back to work! Fairly normal for me, but it's Dave's first day working from home in Calgary. I know he had some connection issues this morning, but I think he's back on track now. We still haven't bought lamps for the bedrooms (no light fixtures), which wasn't an issue until poor Dave sat down to work at 6:30 this morning and had to sit in the dark. We are east facing, so the light should start coming in soon after, however with no A/C that sun creates an oven of our apartment and the blinds have to stay drawn. So tonight we'll have to take care of that.

Our weekend was really nice, and it is great to have Dave home finally. Saturday we slept in, then did errands. We got Dave's driver's license, picked up my car from WestJet's hangar, bought a bunch of stuff from Costco, hit up Ikea... I think there might have been more, but I can't remember anymore. It was a busy day so we just sat back on Saturday night.

Sunday Dave was up pretty early - I think he was mostly excited about the Bomber/Rider game that afternoon. We decided to stay in all day and we worked our butts off. The office, which had become my place to shove stuff that I wasn't sure where to go or how to unpack, was a disaster. Now, it's almost completely free of clutter and very usable. Then we had the heartbreak of seeing the Bombers lose in the last few seconds of the game. Oh well, we'll just have to win next Sunday for the rematch at the BANJO BOWL. Perhaps Dave will blog about the origins of the Banjo Bowl!

Yesterday was another lazy day, and we went to the Stampeders/Eskimos game here in Calgary. A few notable things happened:

"Beach Ball Back"

Lyndsay sprays Coke on the back of the people in front of us

Dude trips going up the concrete stairs and almost crushes his months old baby underneath him

Streaker

Lyndsay hits (or almost hits) the woman behind her while attempting to chuck a wristband thingie that they were giving out

Well "Beach Ball Back" was the chant that Sections J, K and L were screaming after a giant beach ball went over the edge and the security guard threw it away. After about 20 minutes, the ball returned and promptly went over the edge again. Another security guard game and deflated it as she walked away with it. So sad.

We brought a couple bottles of coke. With the first one I made sure it wasn't fizzy before I opened it; with the second I didn't check because it had just been sitting there for at least an hour. Well Murphy's Law - sure enough it bubbled over and I got some on the people in front of us. They were nice about it though, and I only just splashed them.

There was this adorable baby behind us, probably 2-3 months old. We're talking not even holding up her head yet. Her father was carrying her up the stairs to his seats when he tripped and, had it not been for a quick thinking woman sitting on the aisle, would have landed on the baby. Both were okay, but I think the baby's neck might have whipped back - I hope she wasn't hurt.

Streaker - need I say more? Apparently there were several streakers throughout the game, however this one emerged from our section and made it all the way to centrefield before being caught. I'd never seen that live before - it was hilarious!

They were throwing these wristbands into the crowd - they were throwing tons and tons. I ended up with one but didn't want it, so Dave told me to throw it. I brilliantly decided to throw it behind me - I don't think it went far and I think I might have hit the woman behind me. Oops. Well, I never said I could throw!

And so ended our weekend. Thanks to Dave and him working 6:30-2:30 from home, I was at work by just after 7. I would like to work such a schedule - hopefully we can stick with it.

Comments (1)

Tuesday, August 21, 2007, 6:43:55 AM by: Dave Blahut

Yesterday (August 20th) was Dan and Tracy's first wedding anniversary. Congratulation you two. Many of you were present last year when they got married at Niakwa Country Club. It was a blustery day, but everyone had fun and it turned out fantastic.

Wednesday (August 22) is my cousin Danielle's birthday. Unfortunately, she won't be able to join us for Andrew and Gina's reception because she is in Argentina. I believe she is turning 21, but I could be mistaken about that. Happy birthday Danielle!

Friday (August 24) brings us another birthday. My brother and Best Man, Dan turns 33 on August 24. Happy birthday baby brother!

Friday also brings to town the Toronto Argonauts (2-5) who will attempt to remain ahead of the last-place Hamilton Ti-Cats (1-6) by battling the top team in the East - the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (4-2-1). Since there are a lot of family in town this week, Lyndsay and I are trying to arrange a group rate for those who wish to join us at the game. For us to get a group rate, we need to get <del>10</del> 15 people to join us. Those who have committed to attending the destruction of the Argos are:

Chuck

Steve

Andrew

Gina

my Mom (Maureen)

Ken

Elaine

Charlotte

Dan

Tracy

Jacqueline

Bob

It's not too late to join us, but let us know as soon as you can.

The week winds up with the main event (August 25), Andrew and Gina's reception. As most of you know, the couple got married over Easter on the beach in the Bahama's where they both live. They are coming back to Canada to celebrate their nuptials with friends and family by hosting a nice dinner/dance at the Royal Crown - Crown Room at the Fort Gary Place.

See you all soon.

Comments (4)

Sunday, August 19, 2007, 8:50:35 PM by: Lyndsay Walker
This was a busy weekend. I flew into Winnipeg Friday afternoon and left early Sunday afternoon. Here's what we (mostly I) accomplished:

~ Slight "spending spree" at the Bomber store (though it was things we needed - I needed a watch, and something to sit on when the benches get cold, Dave needed socks, etc.)

~ A visit to Party Stuff to look at what's available for renting (chairs and whatnot)

~ Florist shopping (thanks for coming along Jenna!) and selection - King's Florist

~ BBQ with Carrie, Steve, Jenna and Byron

~ A visit to our marriage commissioner - Monique Grabowski (Lady Commissioner)

Things are coming along nicely. Next stop - finding a bakery. Oh darn, cake testing - for those of you who know me, you know how I'm DREADING this task (note obvious sarcasm). Cake... mmmmmmm....

Comments (4)

Morning Radio Contest Winner

Tuesday, August 14, 2007, 6:44:29 AM by: Dave Blahut

This morning, I won a call-in radio contest. I was listening to QX104 FM this morning as I was crawling out of bed and the morning guy was giving away <DEL>Paul Brandt's new CD</DEL> the 2007 Kraft Cheez Whiz Fans' Choice Award CD to the first person who could correctly give Paul's middle name. I don't think anyone had any type of clue at all because the guesses were all over the place. At this point I had no intention of calling in, but I thought I would look it up as I was already at the computer. The guesses were still coming in once I found the answer, so I thought I would give it a try.

I got through on the second try and I gave my answer - Rennee. In addition to the CD, I'm now entered to win the grand prize; a trip for two to the 2007 CCMA awards in Regina, Saskatchewan, September 7-10!! Yee Haw!! I better gas-up the tractor!

Even if I win the grand prize, I won't go. That is the same weekend as the Banjo Bowl, the annual labour day rematch between the Blue Bombers and those inbred, banjo pickin' hicks, the Roughriders.

Less than a year to go!

Friday, August 10, 2007, 8:57:12 PM by: Lyndsay Walker
As of today, we are now officially at under a year to go. I admit, with the move, visiting family, and Dave's job wedding plans got backburnered. And to be honest, there's really no reason for them to be in the forefront just yet. The big things are planned (Ceremony and reception venues, photographer, DJ, wedding dress). I plan to visit florists next weekend - not so much because it needs to be booked immediately, but because I'd like to see what flowers are currently in season. If I can pick a floral arrangement that doesn't require out-of-season flowers brought in, we should be able to save some money. The only other thing that really should be done sooner rather than later is find someone to marry us.

Another thing of note that I paid attention to yesterday/today was the weather in Winnipeg yesterday. Now, I realize that it doesn't mean it'll be the same next year, but it's nice to have an idea. Here's what the weather in Winnipeg was like last night:

22 degrees with a humidex of 28
Mainly clear
...and a rip-roaring thunderstorm in the middle of the night

As long as that thunderstorm doesn't happen during the ceremony, I'm okay with it. In fact, it would probably make for a very happy wedding night for Dave, who loves storms and more importantly, loves to torture me over storms.

On a side note... did you know that while Dan and Tracy were exchanging vows almost one year ago (August 20, 2006) a tornado had touched down just north of the city? Guests at their wedding might remember the wind and the threatening storm clouds. We were lucky - I'm not sure it even ended up raining.

Comments (1)

Table Update

Sunday, August 05, 2007, 9:27:45 AM by: Dave Blahut

Some of you (Chuck) were completely facinated about our table and have asked for more updates on what is going on with the new kitchen furniture. I'm sorry to say that I have not been back to Calgary since we bought it, so I haven't seen it recently. However, I'm sure it's doing fine as we also bought some chairs to keep it company.

Now that we've covered the exciting part, we can move on to other stuff. This weekend, Lyndsay and I are in southern Ontario visiting family and friends. We even got the opportunity to see the Blue Bombers play the Hamilton Ti-Cats on Friday night. Unfortunately, the Bombers fell victim to the Ti-Cats as they earned their first win of the season. Seems like the Bombers have trouble with the Ti-Cats at least once a year. Two years ago, the Ti-Cats won their first game of the year when they were 0-8 against the Bombers and last year won against the Bombers when they were 1-7. The Bombers need to get themselves back together quick as they go from playing the last place Ti-Cats to playing the first place BC Lions next Friday.

Saturday was a busy afternoon. We started by meeting Lyndsay's friends (Peter and Jillian) from Scotland who just moved to Canada about a month ago. We met them at a bar and grill called Jack Astor's for dinner before they had to leave for work.

After dinner, we drove down to Niagara Falls to meet my cousins Chuck and Anne who where in the area playing golf. Reports are that Anne beat Chuck and although I've never seen either of them play, I can believe it. We rendez-vous'd at Boston Pizza right next to a giant ferris wheel. There was a street performer outside the restaurant dressed up as a golden Elvis statue. He was fun to watch for about 2 minutes. After meeting up with Chuck and Anne, we headed over to the Casino Niagara. Lyndsay and my cousins started by playing some slots. I'm not much of a gambler, so I just watched. After a little while of them giving their money to the casino, Chuck, Lyndsay and I walked around to check out the other games being played while Anne continued her quest for riches against the one-armed bandits.

We eventually found our way to an area where Texas Hold'em was being taught to casino patrons in hopes of getting them to go play. The three of us sat down and participated in the lesson. The instructor was very good as he explained all the terminology of the game and how to place bets and some simple poker strategies. The lesson ended with a round of Hold'em. Because it was part of the learning, we just played for fun, no money.

We ended the night of gambling by going to the Hersey Store and getting ourselves a chocolate milkshake that was so thick, it took 5 minutes of sucking on the straw before I got my first taste, but it was very much worth the wait. We said good-bye to my cousins and then headed back to St. Catharines where we to meet up with Peter, Jillian and Lyndsay's friend Adam to do some bowling.

I bowled 121 and won the game. I don't bowl very often, but I'm happy if I score over 100 so I was satisfied with my effort. We wanted to play a second game but the "Master of the Lanes" had already cashed out his till and we were not allowed to continue our fun. Instead, we headed next-door to the Boston Pizza (second BP that day) for a late night snack and some drinks.

We ended our night shortly after and headed home. I think Lyndsay had a really good day. She got to see her friends and show off her ring, which really seemed to sparkle extra bright that day. She's a happy girl, so I'm happy too.

This morning, I'm just sitting out on the back deck making my blog entry. Although I've teased Lyndsay about me being alergic to cats because I don't want any and she does, I think I just might be. Every time I'm inside her parents house, I find it difficult to breathe as my sinuses get congested after a while.

As soon as Lyndsay can drag her butt out of bed, I'll make us some pancakes for breakfast. It's about 11:30 and she is still sound asleep but that is nothing out of the ordinary for her, so breakfast might actually become lunch by the time she joins the land of the living.

(Photos added 2007/08/06.)

Comments (0)

Home Sweet Home

Tuesday, July 31, 2007, 6:44:19 PM by: Dave Blahut

This past weekend, I went to Calgary to check out our new home and to help Lyndsay get settled.

The first thing we did on Saturday was to stop in at the building manager's office so I could sign the lease agreement. After that, we went up to the apartment where I carried my bride-to-be over the threashold. How sweet am I, huh?

After dropping off my bag, we went to Ikea to scope out some purchases we want for our place. After an afternoon of window shopping, we headed back home briefly before heading out to the Calgary Stampeders game. It wasn't the most exciting game, Calgary lost to BC.

On Sunday, we started the day by taking a swim in the indoor pool in our building. I'm going to like that a lot. Afterwards, we borrowed my cousin Mike's truck and headed off to Ikea once again, this time to buy some of the stuff we saw the day before. The main purchase was a kitchen table and some chairs.

We ended the night by going out for dinner, then a movie. We saw The Simpson's Movie. It was very funny, but not very long. It's not cheap in Calgary to see a movie. The price of a ticket is $12.50 vs. the $8.50 here in Winnipeg.

Monday was a relaxing day. We just relaxed around the appartment; went swimming, watched tv. Mom said she wanted to pick me up from airport, so I called my dad and told him he was off the hook. When I landed in Winnipeg, she was no where to be found. Turns out, my very own mother forgot about me. Her first born. Stranded. Alone.

Thanks Dan and Tracy for coming to get me. I appreciate it.

Comments (1)

Winnipeg has the league's top passer in Kevin Glenn, the leading rusher in Charles Roberts and two receivers in the top 5. I pick Winnipeg to win.

BC @ Calgary (July 28)
Saturday morning, I'm flying to Calgary to help Lyndsay unpack and get things settled in our new place. Later that evening we'll be heading to McMahon Stadium to watch the Calgary Stampeders host the BC Lions. Calgary is undefeated at home this season and is coming off a huge win over the Toronto Argonauts. The BC Lions are still undefeated but their number one QB, Dave Dickenson, is still out with concussion problems; second stringer Buck Pierce is battling hand and rib injuries; and last year's Most Outstanding Player, Geroy Simon, has been a non-factor this season. I take Calgary in this game.

Winnipeg @ Hamilton (August 3)
I'll be hopping on a plane in the morning to meet Lyndsay in Hamilton. We're going back to Ontario to see her family; it will be the first time we've seen them since we got engaged. Later that night, after Lyndsay has shown off her bling, we'll head over to Ivor Wynn Stadium (should be called Never Wynn Stadium) to watch the re-match between the Ti-Cats and Bombers. It's tough to beat any team back-to-back and I'm sure the Ti-Cats will be hungry, but I'm hoping that they won't get their first win against Winnipeg. I have to pick Winnipeg in this one too. Hamilton hasn't proven they can win yet.

So in the span of one week, I'll see three games in three different cities. I'm a lucky guy to have such a wonderful fiancée that is understanding of my love of football. Not only that, she is the one who suggested and organized most of this wonderful football week. Thank you Lyndsay, I love you.

Comments (0)
